Ready to get rubbed up.
3way sole; not a good picture but you get the idea.
Those are sweet. That particular model has been given rave reviews over the years. I don't think I've ever tried them on the range but I've heard nothing but good things about them.
Now, onto my club ho'ing adventures of the day.
Today was my monthly trek to Play it Again Sports. It's a bit of a drive (about 15 minutes)so I limit it to once per month. I walked in thinking that I wouldn't find anything that pleases my eye but I was wrong. There on the wall was a set of Ping i20 irons with CFS Lite Stiff shafts, 4-PW, Black Dot and brand new golf pride multi-compound 'whiteout' grips for $379.99.
Next to the i20 was a set of practically new Taylormade Burner 2.0 irons with stock stiff graphite shafts and original Taylor grips. It appears that only the 7 iron was hit on a grass range. They were priced at $249.99.
Now, here's the interesting part. Whilst at the store, I perused their website and saw that they had a special where if you spend over $250 you get $50 off the price. So, the store manager allowed me to use that special for both sets. I got the like new Ping i20s for $330 and the Taylormade Burner 2.0 w/ graphite for $200.
I'm actually going to give both of them a try on the course. I really like the look of the black heads in the Burner 2.0 but the Ping i20s are where my heart lies.
Oh, and I picked up a Ping iWedge 52 degree gap for $14.99.

It appears that there is a lot of heel and toe relief and the sole right under the sweet spots is level for just about the width of the sweet spots. I had a set of Top Flite Tour cast cavity backs that had similar soles and I liked them although that was long before I got into my own clubmaking and the shafts were not right for me. That grind should be very good if you strike the ball more or less conter-face regularly.
Not sure on the term counter(?) face, but I like to hit down with the irons.
Here is a picture of the Maltby's that I got a while back; I think you asked if the $75 I payed for them was per club; it was for the set 5 through GW, plus 18 dollars for shipping. Pretty good for under $100. These are as good as many mizuno cavity backs I have had with great feel and quality of build (will have to wait for summer to see how they perform); another set to put on your radar,Mongrel, as they usually go for less and are right with your passion for changing shafts, as they will accept either taper tip or parallel.

Well that's a hell of a deal on those Maltby's. I've wondered how they can have a "Universal Hosel" without some sort of gimmick like using the ferrule to snug in and align a .355" tapered tip shaft. Sounds like I'd be using a lot of epoxy and mucho glass beads.JonT wrote:Mostly German wrote:There are some sets on Ebay and some good closeups of the soles that I zoomed in on. My 300 forged with the Japanese shaft bands, Miura forged I think there the the 43rd set according to the serial number on the band, none on clubs. Rumor was 500 sets and they couldn't keep up production. Who knows.

FD someone had a lot of money tied up in this set. I don't think they come with KBS shafts especially stiff, and reg in the 5-6 the Monaco shaft is tour only limited 1000 sets supposedly in stiff, in the 3-4 copper in color, for low penetrating long irons, that drop and stop. Perfect. Probably the trickest set I've owned.
I was watching for new listings, and these popped up for 310 or best offer. I offered 270 and there mine. I bet there's close to a thousand in them. 5-6 rounds since new.
My desk is Mahogany
Just for you FD

When the MP62 were first released there wasn't much love from the GR GFF crew at the time. We were so enamored with blades that the general consensus was "That just looks like a shiny new MP30. If Mizuno are just going to release old stuff and stamp a new name on it why don't they remake the MP33 and call it MP63!"
We got our wish with the MP68 & then 69 however the pure blade love seems to have died down since then. The actual MP63 that was later released turned out to be just a rehash of the 62 with that diamond shape cavity.

I'm pretty sure the mp-30 had quite a bit more offset, and were slightly bigger.
The 62 was Luke's baby, the sole design was his influence, and could go straight into a tour players bag. The only turn off is the pw doesn't really blend well with the rest of the set. It's large.

This was a rare find for my 300 forged set. I bet no one can find one, I still would like to find a gap wedge. One of the most addictive irons I've played. In the bag all last season.

Re: Club Ho'ing
Those are some nice sticks, 12Pierogi; I have had a couple sets of the MP30's and would like to find a set of the 62's in nice condition. My budget is less than $200 for anything I buy and the nice sets have been going upwards of $250 to $300 so I will keep looking on those.
I have passed up on several nice sets of TM 300's as I have read that the real Muira forged ones are hard to find (some were forged in Mexico??). Probably should have jumped on the last set I saw as it was pristine and went for $110, but.... So what should I be looking for in these if there is a difference?

There's a set, a guy has with rifle 5.0, now 175 was 150 but he regripped them new karmas I think a wrap. Near mint solid 8.5-9 eBay.
Rumor is the Taiwan model may have actually been built by miura just finishing chrome was done elsewhere.
Even the supposed Mexico made were a double stamp forging just like miura and are amazing.
The real Japan releases have no serial number on the 5 iron, unless later they did. Mine dont and most Miura forged 300 have no serial number. Mine also say on the shaft up by the grip, made in Japan shaft USA on the shaft. The last guy that put grips on slopped solvent on and I didn't think about it till later, and sure enough he smeared the lettering on a few.
The only problem with the early Japanese version, was they would dig a bit, they revised the sole in later versions.
I think they put out one of purist irons ever. The people involved with r&d, production, marketing at the time in Taylormade, was like a who's who in the industry. A lot of talent.
Best Taylormade iron ever. I wouldn't play any other Taylormade iron.

Mizuno MX-11
I tried the 7-iron and 3-iron of the MX-11 with Dynalite Gold R300 shafts. I have to say I'm impressed with the way these look at address with an acceptable amount of offset and a nice, dull-grey finish. Performance is pretty good as well, with the 7 iron flying straight down the middle and landing at the 155 mark. The look at address appeals to me, as the shape of the club has more of a pointed toe near the topline rather than a rounded look.
I may pick them up because it's a 9 out of 10 set (condition-wise) and the sales dude said he let me have them for $59. New grips to boot.

Man, do you stumble into the deals. Never hit them by any 8 club MX set, forged or cast, for $59 is a no-brainer.

They were priced at $99; however, about a year ago one of the sales guys told me that the last two digits on the price tag code at the top right-hand corner represent the trade-in price divided by four. So, if the last two digits are '12' it means they gave the customer $48 for the clubs. This helps me whittle it down until I can reel 'em in baby!

New Release Driver Demo - Simulator
Yesterday I tried out the following drivers in the simulator:
Callaway X-Hot Driver, 9.5, Stock Stiff: I really like the way this driver looks at address. I like the dull-finish,charcoal color on the crown. It has that classic Callaway feel of old, very similar to the 454 driver where you can really feel the face contract. It's a nice, pleasing metallic sound that just screams "pured".
Nike Covert Driver, 9.5, Red/Black shaft: Nice feel and sound. Good penetrating trajectory. The look of the club you'll either love or hate. Fire Engine red color and the head looks smaller than others. I'm not sure if this will be a big seller or a dud. I have a feeling it's going to sell better than other Nike drivers. My buddy just ordered one and I can't blame him because he was hitting in over 280 on every swing.
Taylormade R1 and new RBZ: I don't like the look or feel of Taylormades but I can see why some do. The drivers do look very nice and the paint on the crown I find to be pleasing to the eye. I hate the way they feel, having sort of a "ting" sound when hit. I prefer the feel of the Callaway.
Titleist 913: Too mushy feeling for me. A bit muted and it doesn't feel like the ball is exploding off the face but rather being sucked into it.
If I were to buy one I'd go with the Callaway. I like the look of a roundish head and this one sets up perfect.
Interesting note: After playing with the Titleist 983e for several months now, I find it more difficult to swing a 460cc clubhead. I feel like I'm swiping at the ball and that the clubhead and shaft tend to get off plane. Even though the 983e is the same length, or maybe just a 1/2 inch shorter, it feels much easier to swing. I don't know that it's any shorter in distance either. [img][/img]

I like how Nike put that white checkmark on the back of the crown on the heel side. It is pointed to the left and should encourage an outside-to-inside move towards impact. Perfect for the millions of slicing choppers who will flock to demo and purchase it.
