Post  jmtbkr Mon Feb 18, 2013 3:02 pm

It's going to be a 'hurry up and wait' week here at work. Gotta wait for all the government sign-offs and signatures before we proceed to the next level.......so..........I'm totally bored. How much internet can you surf??? The net is particularly slow today, so trying to get on to golfWRX is painful and NOTHIN seems to be gong on here much. Must be the time of year, especially here in the NE with all the snow and near zero temps. Good thing I have so many golf shops on the island, I ca atleast go around and Ho.

Next week is 10 days in Florida cheers Honda Classic time in the neighborhood Basketball Look for me on TV....I won't be the idiot yelling "Mashed Potatoes!" at the 17th tee. Got my residents tickets, so I can hob-nob with all the big $$$ folks in the hospitality tent, "Why, yes, the new Jag is running in tip top shape" and "Please pass the sweet and sour shrimp!"
I got these cool little spectator foldable chairs so I can park myself in good spots and watch the circus come thru. I'll try and get pics of Tigers' skanks for ya! My neighbor is playing with Big E in the Pro-Am, so I'll follow them around some.

Found some local off road trails to take my spare mtb BIKE on, nearby. That should be fun, not too challenging, but fun neverless. Road riding is crazy down there...to many headless drivers to run you off the road. Sleep

Anyone been playing golf???? Let's here some stories from the course. It sure is quiet in here.

Actually, I do have a fairly entertaining golf story from this last weekend. Our group was second up and we were watching the group in front of us tee off on the 1st hole. It's a par 5 and the group in front of them was already at the 150 yard marker. The guy on the teebox, kept teeing and then reteeing and then finally started with his warm up routine. Meanwhile, the group in front has almost reached the green of the Par 5 1st hole. Then, he turns around and starts talking to his buddies.

I say "Are you going to wait until they finish putting".

The guy looks at me and says "I'm just getting ready to hit and it's really none of your business".

I replied "actually, it is my business and everyone else's business that's going to end up behind you".

He said "what are you going to do about it?"

I replied "I guess I'll kill the time by browsing on my smartphone".

Only got one Florida golf round in. Eight days ago up in St. Lucie County. 8:15 tee time Sunday morning. About 80 degrees and partly sunny, partly cloudy. Wind swirling from west and southwest from 15 to 30 mph. Fairways pretty dry and rolling OK. Greens redone within past two years with some sort of Bermuda hybrid. All 18 greens were absolutely perfect and rolling real fast. Faster than the courses I play in my club group up here in Maryland and southern PA. It was good because my new used big headed high MOI putter got its playing trial by fire and it passed with flying colors. First time on course with my new swing and it was all good with driver but not great with my new (used) and soon to be traded/sold Cobra irons. Regretted not bringing my Mizuno MX's but WTF? Its all for fun anyway. Got rained out at the end of the week. Didn't bother me much, though. They needed the rain very badly.

I skipped my Florida trip this year. I really detest what has happened to the Cincinnati airport. It has always been stupidly expensive, but at least it used to have a shit load of direct flights. Delta used predatory pricing to keep out low cost carriers throughout the 90's and 00's, and they all took root in surrounding cities. Now Delta pulled the plug on Cincinnati's hub status and there are no flights. The low cost carriers no longer care about breaking into CVG because they've got it surrounded.
I wasn't inclined to spend $700 each for 4 tickets to Ft. Meyers to spend a long weekend in Naples, FL.
I am going back to AZ in late March for a dude's golf trip. I am actually a bit nervous about the state of my golf game. I can't remember going so long without hitting a ball. I swung a club in my basement last weekend and it felt unnatural. No fluidity, the setup felt all wrong.

I am fortunate to have two chain golf stores within 15 minutes' drive. Golf Galaxy and Golfsmith. So no matter what the weather, so long as the roads are passable, I can hit balls all year long in one of their hitting stations. Sometimes I will bring a club or two of mine and hit them along with one of theirs so that the salesmen think that I'm comparing what I have with what I can buy. With driver, they'll even offer to set up the launch monitors so that they can prove that the new (choose your poison)model works better than what I brought in.

The sports club we joined in November has a really nice golf simulator that I can use for free. Much nicer than the rigs I've seen at our local Golf Galaxies. I don't do very well with those simulators or any set up where you hit into a net or screen. I just can't relate it to golf. I need to see the ball in the air for me to get any enjoyment or benefit. I always end up seeing if I can hit an 8 iron 200 yards.

I used the simulator one time. There is a bin of ancient golf clubs to use. I snapped the head off a no name 5 wood and called it a day.

I have been pretty consistent about hitting the gym lately. I've always been good about getting in a few days a week with the weights, but cardio and stretching take a back seat when time gets tight. I'm finally in good cardio shape. I feel great, and I started doing a yoga routine last week that I will do for the next 4 weeks leading up to my AZ trip.

We fly out of Dayton, Indy, L'Ville or C-Bus for travel. Never CVG. Your right, that airport really took a dump.

I don't like hitting balls in the simulator either. I swing too hard and I always end up screwing something up prior to the next round. In fact, today I'm going to the doctor because I think I injured myself in the simulator the other day. Like an idiot, I was hitting a bunch of different drivers and my upper back started to get the slightest bit of sharp pain right in the middle where there's that little bump right before the neck begins. Now, I've got what appears to be nerve pain in my left leg at night. It just came out of nowhere. I also can still feel the slight pain in that upper back spot below my neck. I can't believe I just kept hitting balls after feeling the pain begin. Now, I'm going to need to ask the doctor to do all kinds of tests because the thing in the leg could be a clot or something else. Damn it sucks getting older. On a solid note, I'm losing weight and feeling much better health wise. I also quit dipping tobacco, something I've done since playing baseball in high school.

Wait 'till you're in your 60's Razz Razz Razz

My friend works at GS, so I get to go whenever I'm in the mood to waste an hour hitting all the new and used stuff. Now if he would only sell me those used MP58's I've been hitting to compare to everything else.... Neutral

I quit dipping 10 years ago. Like you, dipped in high school/college and after - playing baseball. Just quit 1 day, cold turkey. The only way (for me) to do it. Tried cutting back, but that never worked. After a miserable week or 2, I was fine. I think people lie when they say they dont miss it.....I know I could start back up....

Time is money, especially when I'm traveling for work. I have been fortunate enough to have either local clients or driveable clients for the past half dozen years, but I spent a solid 10 years flying out of CVG every week. Many of the places I used to go to have no direct options. Over the rest of my career, there is no doubt I'll need to fly weekly. I can see moving to a city with a grown up airport when that becomes a reality.

Makes sense. I dont travel for work, and if I do, its only to Cbus so I drive. Cincy sucks for business travel. My pops used to work in the airline industry and always complained about flying in/out of CVG. They now fly into Dayton when visiting us. I live equal distances from Day and CVG.

I agree LH, that's the only way to do it. You can't substitute stuff for it, cut back or only do it on Tuesdays. Just quit and go through what seems like hell for 2 or 3 weeks. Good to hear someone else has quit and never gone back.

Most importantly, you have to want to quit yourself. Being poked and prodded by others makes it worse....I made the decision to do it - and never looked back.

I've played gold twice in about 2-1-2 months and I chipped and putted for an hour this last weekend. The club does feel foreign to me, same with the swing.

I've also been working out and trying to lose weight. I've started getting up early and doing 250-300 KettleBell swings, about 30 minutes of metabolic type stuff. Doing ladders of 5-10-15-15-10-5 with work and rest being equal. Normally a buddy, I go, you go drill but I just estimate rests. I also started taking some coach/lessons from a power/Olympic lifter. Pretty good stuff. I'm going to learn power lifting style squat, deadlift, and bench. Once I have the base I want to learn some Olympic style lifts. The only problem I see in the future is time if I want to golf. Either I scale back my exercise during the summer or I become a recreational golfer. I'm not sure which way I will go.

I've just returned from a weeks vacation in the South Island where I stayed in a golf resort named Milbrook and played 6 games of golf in 8 days. We were very lucky. The weather forecast was shit all week but the weatherman was dead wrong (as usual) and we had sunshine everyday. Played games 4 different courses including my all time favourite Jacks Point twice. The other two days were filled with a bit of sight seeing and wine tasting. I'm back to enjoying my golf so I am going to try and get in as much as possible before daylight saving comes to an end. Then it will be back to winter golf on the weekends only.

It's weird, but I haven't lost a ton of weight, but I'm defeinitely in better shape than a few months ago. My wife went to a trainer 3 times a week for several months. He emphasized a lot of the stuff you are into. Ladders, sprints, explosive jumps, power lifting moves. I was blown away by what she do after a couple months.
I'm at 175lbs, which is pretty much what I was at by the end of the golf season. I'm definitely leaner though. In 2009, after I completed P90X, I was about 155. I'm probably stronger in all the static exercises now. I know it's cliched, but I truly don't have the time to dedicate 8-10 hours per week working out. I'm happy with what I'm doing, knowing it will be much less once the weather gets nice and the golf course comes calling.

So is it your buffed physique that causes you to break so many golf clubs or is it your steep, choppy swing causing you to hit the mat first in the simulator?

F*ck...Im at 210. Down from 220 in December when my doctor wanted me to lose some weight. Been eating much better, and drinking protein shakes. Working out as well. So I feel much better. Doubt I will get to 175 though...200 is my goal.

Where is Lorenzo to give you shit about your kettle bells when you need him?

Zo would be giving me a thumbsup for separating my cardio and strength training. He would give me shit about joining a gym and taking lifting lessons. But then Olympic lifts are pretty technical, that is if you want to do them right. I have no problem doing the base 3, squat, dead and bench, but I'm looking forward to learning the progression of olympic lifts.

Speaking of Olympics, what did you think of the OIC dropping wrestling from the Olympics? I know many here ate not into guys humping each other on the mat, MMA style, but wrestling has been around since the dawn of the Olympics. Zeus will be angry. Seems weird to me that "sports" like table tennis, badminton, rhythmic gymnastics, and even golf survive but a true test of combat, wrestling, is dropped. What's next, drop the marathon?

I agree. I'm no wrestling fan but I can't believe they would drop one of the original Olympic sports. Hell even Rugby Sevens will be in Rio in 2016. As for golf WTF???

You're probably about a year ahead of me. After starting my business I invested a ton of hours over the first 5 years to get it off the ground. Now I'm paying for the lack of exercise and cumulative affect of eating too much combined stress. I need to lose about 20 lbs while gaining muscle. I'm on a 2 lbs a month weight loss schedule. Which is very doable without too much suffering. If I just keep the carbs out of my fat pie hole, add in greens and I'm good. The hard part is realizing weight loss is a marathon not a sprint if you want to lose fat.

All I know is I wrestled in High School and it was by far the hardest physical sport I ever did. I was in great physical shape, eat very well, and I was strong for my weight. 3, 2 minute rounds exerting all your strength against another person the same size is hard work. I don't get the OIC. Could you imagine being a wrestler in your prime getting ready for the next Olympics and wake up to that news? That would suck.
