I just read an obscure book about baseball scouts titled "Dollar Sign on the Muscle." It focuses on the Phillies and their futile draft of 1981, but also has lots of stories about scouts from other orgs. One is about a longtime Indians scout named Cy Slapnika. In the late 1920s he was tipped about an amateur pitcher named Lefty Gomez. He recalls, "I saw the guy come out of the shower, and said to myself, 'there's no way anybody with a dick that big can ever pitch in the majors.'" Career record: 189-102.
