I disagree with one of the premises of what is being written.  Jews responded to exclusion by gaining practically all of the top posts of the world's leading financial institutions both governmental and private, not by starting country clubs.  Also by promulgating Sandy Koufax.

It was really those two things.

You may be right, but I like the joke about the difference between Hillcrest and LACC. The Jews care more about the dining room than the course.

The very first baseball game I ever attended, Koufax pitched. All I remembered was the Giants won 8-0, Billy Pierce struck practically everybody out, and a lady behind me got hit full in the face with a hot foul drive, needing to be removed on a stretcher. A few years ago, when Retrosheet came online, I discovered that that game was the opener of the '62 playoff.

Well that didn't happen too often. It was usually the side of the head because they weren't paying attention. These days with texting it's more plausible.

Koufax is God. .95 era in 8 WS games, about 2.00 the second half of his mlb career. His curve is legend his fb moved 2 ft.

He also refused to pitch on the Sabbath even during World Series. So yes… He lacked some dedication.

Decades ago I was a member of one of those "WASP" country clubs. Except there were Catholics as well as Protestants who were members. Men, only. Lots of lawyers and bankers. Many deals were done on the course that would undoubtedly have been in violation of the Anti-Trust statutes. A goodly percentage were in the society "Blue Book". Although I am of mongrel descent, my ex's family are Descendents of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence so that slipped me in no problem. There was one member who was a Jew. He had a German last name so hardly anyone even noticed. But the Star Chamber old boys who constituted the governing board knew and the only reason he was a member was that he was the president of the local "world-renown" university.

In Baltimore, the Jews had their own exclusive country clubs that were closed to non-Jew membership. I played several of those because my best golf friend who had been a PGA pro and played on the Florida mini-tour in the early '70's knew all the local pros and we got on all the courses on Mondays when the clubs were closed. The Jewish clubs with the "old money" memberships had both immaculate courses and at least four-star dining rooms. And more scratch players than the WASP clubs.

In the summer of 1964, my uncle took me to some games at the Chavez Ravine where I saw both Koufax and Drysdale pitch. I have never and will never see a pitcher like Koufax.

In '64, the game to see at Chavez Ravine didn't even involve the Dodgers.
