GR used to have some forumites from North Carolina and this event is right in their back yard.

I never played Pinehurst #2 but my father used to play it in the 1950's and '60's. I did have old persimmon MacGregor woods that he used to play it. A driver, two wood and three wood. The heads all eventually disintegrated. Termites, maybe?

Horseball's boy finished at seven over. Hey, he broke 80 and finished better than some of the pros. And there's always tomorrow.

Getting ready to go home from work now and looking forward to some endless coverage.

I was in the Pinehurst area about 20 yrs ago, very interesting area, within 10-mile radius everywhere we drove we saw a fairway or greens on either side. I played at Foxfire which has 2 18-hole courses. We stopped by the Pinehurst GC, the Grand hotel was very grand, the club house was HUGE... once we walked out of the club house, there are 8 T-boxes for 8 courses .  I think the No.8 was just completed not long before that.  I was told to play the No.2 you had to stay at the Grand hotel,  I am sure the rule has not been changed... Nice but boring area, hot and muggy in July... No, thanks, not for me

I don't like the tourney this year... Pros are not being punished enough with high rough... That should be the signature of USOpen  

I still think Grimmer had a great week. He made 5 birdies on Thursday's round of +7. I doubt there were more than a handful of guys who made 5 birdies. I was working remotely on Thursday and had the tourney on in the background. They showed Will putting at least three times, including his birdie on his last hole.

His dad was updating our head pro with various pictures of Will with other pros prior to the tourney, and our pro was forwarding them to many of us. Must have been a dream come true for him. Can't wait to congratulate him next time I'm at the SPCC, because I'm sure he'll be there practicing as usual.

Five birdies in the first round you ever played at Pinehurst #2 from the way-backs is almost unheard of. The fact that it was done in a player's first ever U.S. Open round makes it even more rare.

Glad to see that while there was a lack of high fairways rough to punish the pro, it made up with tough putting greens... and hats off to Martin, he really earned this HUGE win.
Lady Pros next, I bet they will WET the greens for the ladies since they can't hit them high like men Pros to stop the balls on greens. I bet M.Wie would have trouble putting those greens

From my perspective, it was a stunning U.S. Open performance by Kaymer. Better than McIlroy and just as good as any of Tiger's. Speaking of whom, I did not miss him at all. And all that silliness leading up to the first round about Phil and Payne Stewart. If I was Phil, I would be embarrassed by all that crap. He appears to not have a whole lot of gas left in the tank. And I really liked that golf course. More like a British Open than the typical over-watered and overgrown cluster-f*ck that typifies U.S. Opens. Kaymer used his brains with putter off the greens. In fact, I don't recall seeing him hit a chip at all. It drove the announcers nuts. I heard them announce that NBC will no longer be doing this major having telecast Opens for the last 20 years. I thought they did a good job. At least no Jim Nantz. And Johnny Miller proved once again that he is the absolute best commentator at a major. Scored big points with me when he said on Sunday afternoon late in the round that Ricki Fowler might want to reconsider wearing orange for his final rounds. Hoooahhh.

Agree.... Kaymer's performance was incredible , it would be tough for him - or anyone - to repeat that. I believe that Phil does not have a confidence to win the USOpen, after 6 times being second... that would fukkkk your mind up   

I didn't watch much of Sunday's coverage. I checked the scores around 5pm and saw that Kaymer was dominating and no one was making a charge. I'm sure I wasn't the only one, given it was Father's Day. For me, the course alone on TV can't hold my attention. I need some competition, and that was lacking on Sunday. It had about the same feel as when McIlroy ran away with it a few years back. Great playing and dominant golf, but boring to me.
The Golf Channel showed a repeat of the final round in '99. That was an incredible tournament. I remember watching it live, but even in the replay where I know what is going to happen, I was riveted.
2008 where Tiger won at Torrey may be my favorite in recent memory. My dad had a stroke earlier in the week, and he was barely conscious, but he and I watched Sunday and the Monday playoff in his hospital room.

Even though Kaymer had a pretty strong lead, I watched much of the last fourteen or so holes. All it would have taken is one chain of bad shots and the other guys at minus four, three, two and one would have been back in the game. One of those chasers, Compton, was playing the round of his life.

I don't think it was anywhere close to as good as Tiger's win in 2000. Tiger kept increasing the lead while Kaymer just kind of held on. Plus, what he did after holing his putt on 18 was really lame. Pump your fist or something dude.

Playing Pebble Beach in the summer with the course set up at under 6,900 yards? Come on. Look at Tiger's competition in 2000. There was probably no one in that field who could average drives within 20 yards of Tiger. Transplant Pinehurst #2's greens of last week to Pebble during the Open in 2000 and Tiger would have had a tough time breaking 300 for the event.

And, Kaymer had the class to not make a Nancy-boy diva of himself after his last putt died in the hole.
