Taking off grips without destroying them Empty Taking off grips without destroying them

Post  jmtbkr Thu Aug 08, 2013 7:24 am

I've decided to fatten up my new grips with a few more wraps of tape under them.

I have a 100psi compressor. Can I just shoot air in the end and pull them off?
Once they are off, do I need to remove the old tape, or apply new over the old?

Mongrel mentioned he uses duc tape under his grip. Will grip tape stick to that?

My thought was to apply a layer of duc tape and then 2 or 3 layers of grip tape.
Just want to fatten them up a bit more.

    Thank you....cyclops

I don't have a compressor but I managed to remove and re-use a few grips doing it the old fashioned way with a screwdriver and lots of grip solvent. Too much hassle anymore. At $4.49 a grip for the Golfpride Tour wraps, I just go buy a new one.

Double-sided grip tape will indeed stick to the duct tape. And lead tape. I always remove the old tape and use new when re-gripping. I've regripped lots of clubs and found some pretty squirrely tape jobs on some used clubs I bought that must have been OEM installs. I've measured as much as 15 grams of tape wrap under a driver grip. And tip weights? Damn. I just reshafted a Nickent hybrid with another Nickent fairway hybrid shaft and that shaft had more than 10 grams of metal tip weight. No wonder the club popped the ball straight up in the air off a bare lie.

Using air to take off grips that are on with tape might cause the grip to explode. If you put them on with air, you can take them off with air.

You can buy a little tool that is used to take grips off that are on with tape. It's a long thin piece of metal that you just slide down between the shaft and grip, and pour a little solvent in as you go. Works well, but you will notice the grip is a little stretched where you put the tool in.

I either take the old tape off or just put a layer of new tape over top if it's the first time I'm re gripping that club. (I play with 2 wraps)

U said the key words here...

If U want to reuse old/new grips, U could use needle and inject paint thinner thru grip and that should weaken the adhesive at interface... easy pull - I did that several time (only if grip is fairly new)

Using air requires not using double sided tape. I love it.

Exactly. I use a couple of wraps though, so I need the tape for the extra thickness. I suppose you could find some other kind of tape to put on the shaft and just blow the grip over it but I have never done it or seen it done.

Many moons ago I worked at a golf store for about a year. We replaced grips. When the shaft was graphite, we would use this needle to make a hole in the grip and inject solvent. It wasn't easy but it worked. However, one time I stapped my finger with the needle and never used it again. I'd be careful with the compressor. Use a safety helmet with the hard plastic shield in front to protect your face and eyes. The solvent and tape is a pretty strong hold.

    Haha!!!

OK, lesson learned. DO NOT use 100 psi to blow grips off, especially if they're solvent taped on.

    Inserted nozzle into grip hole.
    Blew air in.
Watched enormous bubble expand in middle of grip.
Saw, but did not hear explosion.
    Heard explosion 1 sec after.
    Sharded myself!Shocked

So I took Mongrel's advice and bought a new grip after cutting off the pieces that were left on the shaft.

Re-installed grip carefully not to stretch the grip longer.

    Perfectomundo!

I'm probably too late but don't try to re-use toilet paper either.
