The new Ben Hogan (no longer affiliated with Callaway) Fort Worth 15 blades are the most beautiful irons on the market today. And guess what?
They have the lofts rather than numbers stamped on the sole.

Every veteran player who bemoans the fact that modern irons are a full two clubs stronger-lofted than those with which we grew up has to love this feature. I love this feature. While the iron numbers make sense to the pre-social security crowd, they have become an abomination to me. Everybody hits his 6-iron 180 yards, but oh yeah, it's really a 4-iron. Just put the goddamned loft on the sole and nobody is lying to anybody.

I wish I could hit blades better than I do. These clubs would be in my bag so fast.

It won't hurt my feeling... If those irons are a full 2 clubs stronger-lofted for my benefits (still hit high trajectory and longer distance) then why the hellllllllllllll I am complaining, that's what happens with my current Cobra S2 and I enjoy those clubs... Do we want a beautiful set of clubs and score around 95 or a decent looking set of club and score around 85. result is what I am looking for

Until the year that metal spikes were outlawed for all except the Precious Few who play On Tour, I could hit my Palmer Standard forged blade 6 iron with its 37.5" Dynamic Gold S300 shaft 180 yards. Those irons were old school lofts with tiny heads and sweet spots the size of a flea clit. The reason I could hit it 180 was because I was able to play the ball back and come down hard on it enough to compress the shit out of it. Hit like that, the trajectory was more like a low lofted driver than a 6 iron but they would hit and hold even hard greens. The reason I was able to do that was primarily because I could dig in with my right foot enough to drive my legs through the shot. Never found a plastic spike that would work for that. Oh well.

As for loft degree numbers on irons, I only have them on two wedges. The gap wedge is printed with a "G". I guess its OK to have the degree numbers but I find it more simple to have the lower numbers. "9" is easier for my brain to intuit than "40" or whatever degree iron right next to the pitching wedge is. Besides, with irons forged from relatively malleable steel alloys, one might like to have his iron lofts adjusted from time to time. So with that new Hogan set, you would have to keep a reminder card or use a permanent marker on the clubhead to note that "31" is now "29" after you got it bent two degrees strong. If that club was marked "6" on the sole, it would be easier to remember that you just had it bent a bit strong. Catch my drift?

The "complete set" of Hogan Fort Worth 15 irons and wedges is 44 clubs--every loft from 20 to 63º.  You buy the ones that you want, specifying lie angles.  With my choice of graphite shaft and wrapped grip, they're $168 each.

Mongrel likes to tinker with his gear, so I can see why he might prefer sticking with the club numbers, this despite the degree to which they've been corrupted since the mid to late thirties when they took over for club names like mid-iron, mashie, niblick, jigger, and the like.  You'll never see a 48º 9-iron again.

I do all of my tinkering on the order sheet. The new Hogan system is perfect for me.  At this stage of my game, however, the clubs are probably not quite forgiving enough for me to be tempted.  Still, I love what they've done and wouldn't mind seeing it catch on. Mind you, I don't expect that it will. I just wouldn't mind seeing it.

ANYTHING that adds joy to our golf game is a good thing... I've played 7 rounds with my new TM JetSpeed 13* M-flex and NOT a single slice yet, all on fairways and 2 times on first cut... could not ask for anything thing better than that. It's NOT a club for everyone otherwise we would not find them on fleaBay, somehow it's made for me... EXTREMELY happy with it....

Actually, the 13º JetSpeed in regular and senior flexes is for a LOT of people...people hitting 9.5s and 10.5s badly but too stubborn to change!

Yes it was ME until I could not launch my 9.5* driver head, not counting 30% chance that I would slice a ball... I made a calculate risk knowing that I launch my 12* GBB driver nicely ( but still slice once in a while) ... until this driver, UNBELIEVABLE ,,,, I launch it high, longer and land where about I want it to land, and yes, with some roll.... I feel like a real Pro (seriously , my confidence) at the T-box... I thank TM for this club

In fact , I shot 85 and 88 last 2 rounds at a rather difficult golf course (for me) partly/mostly because of this driver. Deerfield GC in Newark DE is 6000+ yds with a slope rating of 131-132 from white Ts, but it plays more like 6250+ yds since greens are mostly uphills,,, after the T shots, U would be lucky if you find a FLAT lie, almost nil... Mongrel, you and your gang should try it, warn you, it's definitely more difficult than the Pilgrim's Oak due to severe uneven lies. This is a home course for men & women Univ of Delaware golf teams
