I played at Deerfield GC last Friday and ran into an interesting situation... On a par-3, I hit it almost pin high and unfortunately the ball rolled to the right and almost against a fence. I scooped the ball (like this Utube) onto the green. My question is "is it a legal play?" I just found this you tube

I think that the legality of your shot depends on whether you took any sort of backswing of the club in order to get the club face under the ball and whether it was done in one deliberate motion. You did not mention whether your scoop successfully got the ball onto the green or whether you made the putt for a par. In any case, my opinion is that The Rules generally suck with ambiguity and, unless your are playing in a USGA-governed event or for money against rules sticklers, it doesn't mean shit. Now if you were playing against rules sticklers for money, you might have called one or more of them over and got their OK to play that type of shot. When you have a consensus, everything is cool.

I would think you get relief because you can't make a back swing. I may be wrong.

If it's a friendly game. what the hell.....scoop it or move it.

I wonder what the rules sticklers in my league would say.

In lieu of any local rule pertaining to his situation, he could/should have declared the ball unplayable and dropped it in accordance with rule with a one stroke penalty. Of course he didn't say how far right of the green this fence was.

The fence is about 20ft from the fringe of the green. But the question is "Is scooping of a golf ball even legal ???'
