I played my last club event last Sunday---Round 3 of the playoffs-- and couldn't break 100 even though hit mostly real good drives and some stellar iron shots. Freaking greens were super fast despite not being cut for a week during the rains and the rough was wet and juicy. And the diabolical pin positions. That's OK though since I know what to keep and what to replace. The Ping G15 driver is a keeper especially with the used Serrano regular flex I put in it. I need new irons and have my eyes on either Taylormade 2009 Burners or the Burner 2.0's. Or maybe a set of Rocketbladez if I can find them cheap. Last Saturday I hit some of those in Golf Galaxy and never had a 7 iron fly so far with a thin hit down between the first and second groove. 170 carry according to the store computer. Damn. And probably a different putter since the Odyssey WhiteHot Pro #7 turned out to be a wobbly piece of shite.

Aesthetics are so subjective and so personal. I could never play one of this generation's major OEM irons with the contrasting textures and loud graphics on it. I played Callaway Apexes for a season and a half, and while they're not too bad cosmetically, I recently bought a set of irons for which I probably don't have quite enough game because they looked so beautiful to me. When they left the club numbers off, I was helpless. I've been calling for that concept for a decade!

I did my best to give up golf when my old club closed and I didn't find a comfortable home in another. Little by little, my niece, my girlfriend, and my friends Al Pacino'd me. I thought I was out and they pulled me back in. I had one awesome round last month, but for the most part, spinal stenosis has turned my game to mush. Then, before I can help it, I spend about two grand on a new set of irons when my last set isn't really broken in yet. I'm a fucking idiot. Where it comes to golf, I always have been.

So now, with two new sets of irons, new fairways, wedges, and other odds and ends, I will have to play next year--even if I'm in a wheelchair, for Christ's sake. I already use a cane when I walk the dog, but then I go out and torture my back because golf is the heroin of my life. Even smoking was easier to give up, and I went through hell with that. But you know you shouldn't play when your post round drink is vodka, cranberry juice, and oxycodone.

My nephew brought me a Titleist 983K 11.5º driver that my brother had. I don't usually play a full size driver, but this one was when they were only up to about 360cc (still a pumpkin on a stick). I don't like teeing the ball up high enough or playing it left in my stance enough to hit a club like this, but I pounded a few balls on the range with this thing today. It felt about 44" long--not too bad. After a few ugly efforts, I hit a few nice balls with it. God, these titanium monsters are long. I'm 69, and I'm popping this thing way over the 200 yard marker, I'm guessing maybe 240 or so. I don't need 240 to score at my course, but still, if that doesn't prove that equipment needs to be rolled back, I don't know what does. A half-crippled septuagenarian shouldn't be hitting range balls that far. Although, he probably shouldn't complain about it, either. There are three, maybe four holes on the track with wide open scenery where I'd pull this big dog out. I'll tell you how I made out if it doesn't suddenly snow.

People always go high on a new track, and you play a new track on every outing with your group, Mongrel. Even if you're hitting the ball well, you don't really know the lay of the land and all the GPS in the world isn't the same as having been there before.

New greens are like new broads. You have to feel your way around a little bit before you're ready to score. The beauty of golf is that even with forgettable scores, you're going to remember pretty shots. Think about those.

Your array of possible iron choices leaves me speechless, but then few people ever want to borrow my bag, either. Whatever will get you into the hole, bro.

Not a new track for me. Its on our regular rota and its one that I always swear I'll never play again. It was built routed through a hundred some acres of woods with nasty terrain in the late '80's next to a perfectly fine traditional parklands course from the late '50's where I usually do pretty well. Problem with the newer one is that in an attempt to make it a "premium" "upscale" track, they used bluegrass for the tees and fairways and some sort of slick as shit hybrid for the greens after installing wicked contours in all 18 or them. Anyone with a clinically functional brain knows that bluegrass fairways in our climate is a loser. But it was a round of golf and the guys I was paired with that day are two of the best. I left a half a pitching wedge from 85 yards an inch short for an eagle on the short par 4 fifth hole and made a par on the tricky little par 4 eighteenth. I think it was the only the second birdie I ever made on that course and the first time I made par on the last hole.

The 983K is 365 CC. I have 9.5* and 10.5* heads lying around. First one I bought was around '95 or '96 when I found one used in a shop for $70 with a ProLite 3.5 stiff shaft in it. Nasty little tack driver that was. Ended up giving it to my son a couple of years later and the first drive he hit with it on the first hole at another local muni, a dogleg left of about 425 yards, ended up about 80 yards from the green. Needless to say he was jazzed.

We live about 3 miles from Deerfield and I've learned that this GC allows golfers who have a hard time walking drive his/her special golf cart ALMOST to the greens. I really respect their thoughtfulness to those who still wanna play

I don't know why but I begin feeling golf fever this time of year. Perhaps it's because the golf courses in Southern Cal are less crowded during football season and rounds are much quicker. Only the real golfers are still playing.

I took the old Taylormade R5 Dual N driver out for my last round and shot 76. It may be 5 to 10 yards shorter but not by much. Much easier to control and in the fairway most of the time. I have no data to back this up but my guess is that most golfers have lost both accuracy and overall length with the new drivers. The Taylormade M1 is a joke. $499 price point. Really? I think that driver may go down as the all time quickest one to be discounted. Callaway tried the composite driver for years and gave up.

Titleist's only composite, the 909 DComp, is my favorite Tit driver and I still have two of them. However, my Ping G15 stays in the bag next year since it is about perfect for me with its misses to the left entirely my fault. I finally worked it out that to minimize those lefts to playable drives, all I have to do is weaken my grip to full-on neutral with left thumb on top of the shaft. Over our winter, I will work on opening the face a degree or two with the neutral grip to see if I can't get a reliable baby cut.

I noticed that you played with Taylormade Tour Burner irons and had some good things to say about them. I just picked up a set off the 'Bay and had to cut them down to about 1/4" over published specs. Have yet to hit them off grass... only rubber range mats. Got them with the stock stiff 105 steel shafts that I am trying to figure out which True Temper shaft they remind me of. Thinking maybe Dynalite Gold?

I'm playing XP105 stiff shafts in my Mizzy 850's.  Big step up from the DGR300S I have in the Tommy Armours. Much more controllable and accurate, for me.
I just played 4 days with my Cally X-20's with the stepped Cally shafts and realized why I haven't played them in a couple years.
    New tech feels better.

Meanwhile, it's gonna be upper 50's on LI this weekend, so I'll go spend an hour hitting at the PGASS tomorrow. 4 days in south florida is a tease.......
