Rest In Peace Bill.... Empty Rest In Peace Bill....

Post  Lorenzzo Tue Mar 17, 2015 10:21 pm

A couple of days ago I was in Orange County for a party.  I called my friend Bill to see if he was coming but he said no, he had a funeral to attend to. This morning I saw he posted something on FB about Italian food. So when my ex called me a couple of hours ago to say he died today I just couldn't understand it.

I knew this guy for years, watched him handle a couple of business failures, other difficulties but never once saw him emit anything other than positive energy. He set up home theaters for people all over the entertainment industry.  His work earned him many magazine covers.  He really knew how to live. He was a good guy.

A massive heart attack it was. It's too soon to eulogize amongst his friends and family so I thought I would post here, a place where no one else knew him. Fellas enjoy each day and take care of yourselves.

Sorry to hear about your old friend Zo. Just over a year ago an old friend of mine dropped dead from a heart attack at age 55 whilst out bike riding. Slim, fit, non smoker, very light drinker, did everything in moderation. You just never know when your time is up.

Agree with your sentiment. Enjoy each and everyday and take care of yourselves.

    Cheers

Thanks for sharing a sad story. I bet all of us have run into similar stories. Early this yr a HS friend from Vietnam who came to S.Cali (Little Saigon) and visited his son (studies in S.CA). He came in USA on Friday night, next Sat his son took him to Universal Studio and Sat night he had a massive heart attacked ... So he enjoyed USA for about 24 hrs. We all chipped in for about $6K to take care of his funeral in S.CA and sent his ash back to Vietnam with his wife

It's always a impetus for thought when somebody leaves us.  I have no living relatives from the previous generation. I am the elder generation, now, and I find myself realizing how many people with whom I spent a great deal of time in my life are gone.  Everybody from the previous generation.  Quite a few from my own (including Nifty I).  And sadly, some from the generation after mine.

I miss many of them greatly, and I'm sure all of you know exactly what I mean.  Yet, by the same token, the idea of being immortal is not something I'd want to contemplate.  Most of the folks I know who had their full share of at bats before bowing out of the lineup were ready to go.  I'm not in any extreme hurry to go, but from here on end, I certainly have nothing to b!tch about if my time comes.

I have always thought that most people with the courage to use an honest scale would find that their travails over the course of life probably outweighed their rewards. In strict mathematical terms, that would make life a net-negative experience.  But unless one's miseries were excessively severe, most of us would probably still find a measure of worth in the experience.

Fuck it, it's probably of no practical benefit to this this deeply about it.  But who among us never does?

Yeah. As I get older, I find new benefits from being alive. Like a month ago, I had cataract surgery on both eyes which were approaching uselessness for anything requiring distance vision. Like driving and playing golf. Now I can see fucking better than I ever could with corrective lenses and can drive without glasses for the first time since 1963. I've hit balls twice since last November including a medium bucket session in Florida on Tuesday and 120+ balls today at my local muni range. I can see the flights of wedges to drivers and it makes dialing in adjustments a lot easier. The old lady and I shared the driving yesterday from Vero to Baltimore with me doing the final six hour stint at night with no eyestrain or glare problems. Makes me want to get a crotch rocket Hyabusa or Porsche again.

Thanks for the thoughts, guys.  It's the realization that Bill's life is over and that we'll never see him again that's hard to grasp. I had another friend fight cancer for 7 years and then pass a few months ago. While his dying was still a shock we all knew it was coming.  In Bill's case it was just so sudden.

Nift, gotta disagree about the cost benefit of life.  I love mine as do most of my friends and family. We may be lucky but I think there are possibilities out there that could light or rekindle your joy of living. One would be to pursue a resolution for your depression. They exist, only fear stands in your way.

Here's the thing, Daig. Depression is a brain chemistry condition. Clinical depression isn't about something. Being depressed over something is perfectly normal, and then we just work it out. With real depression, we just take meds to help balance our chemistry and it usually works, at least to a worthwhile degree.

I must sound more depressed than I am. I'm actually ok. Things have been much sketchier than they are now, and my life isn't bad at all. I've got a girlfriend, a puppy, a real nice retirement community condo, a couple of cars, and I haven't had to take oxycodone for my back in at least two months. And last summer, I even started to play a little golf again. But there's something in the way that I express myself that isn't particularly jovial. I get that.

Anyway, we all send condolences. It always sucks to lose a friend.
