First genuine hole in one Empty First genuine hole in one

Post  Kiwigolfer Sat Oct 11, 2014 9:51 pm

My first genuine hole in one today.

20 odd years ago I blocked a shot OB then aced my next ball to card a three which I was thrilled with at the time but looking back over the years I really regretted that wasn't my 1st ball. Then a couple of years ago I aced a short par three on a little short public course but I couldn't really count that as it is not an affiliated golf course.

Anyway it finally happened today. Third hole my home course. 177m (193yds) par 3, 4 iron, struck solidly but not pure. In the air it is slightly left and I expect it to land short and left. Instead it hits the fringe and pitches forward rolling towards the pin. My buddy exclaims "Get in the hole!" and the ball duly obliges.

    What a great buzz! Wink

Congrats. Its been since 1955 and I'm still waiting for it. Ironically, a friend and co-worker of mine in the '90's had his only ace on a longish par 4 at his home club and it was produced by a 4 iron hit pretty thin, landing short, bouncing once, and rolling into the hole. Thin to win, baby.

    Congrats!!!

I've come pretty close on occasion, but no beans yet.

    My closest has been 1" on a 175yd par3.
Saved myself about $100, at least, cause I would have had to buy the beers for the other 19 idiots I play with in my work league.

I didn't thin it, I struck it solidly but not the most pure strike so obviously hit it out of the grooves but not dead centre of the sweet spot. If it had been at the center of the green it would have landed in the middle of the green and rolled towards the back of the green. The pin was back, left. The left hand side of the green angles away front to back from right to left and it's a longer carry to hit back of the green so I was really aiming for the middle of the green. Whilst it was in the air I was honestly expecting it to hit the fringe, kick left and wind up in a little gully beside the green pin high leaving me a delicate little chip and putt. But instead it kicked forward off the fringe and rolled in. Definitely some luck involved but it wasn't a bad shot or a perfect shot. It was a good shot that got lucky! Wink

Nicely done, KP. 4 iron is legit.
    Still stuck at zero...

Hey Kiwi. Well done. Coincidentally I had my first this year as well. Par 3 with a 5 iron and it was a pretty pure strike, I saw it go in and it was during the main Saturday comp so a winner all around.
Did yours feel a little surreal at the time? When mine went in it sort of felt weird. In 22 years of playing I have lipped them out, bounced of the pin, left them a couple of inches short and finished directly behind the hole. Then one day, one shot out of nowhere suddenly goes in. Yes, very surreal experience.
Since it happened I have found out that many, many players I know, some who have played longer than me are still waiting. Mongrel is a case in point. Can be an elusive little bastard the old hole in one.
Anyway great work and all power to you.

Well done, Kiwi. I would have hit a 5 iron but...

Thanks OP. I was pretty elated but to be honest my buddies were whooping and hollering more than me. It didn't feel weird, more just a satisfied contentment. I was coming back after a long layoff from golf so I had pretty low expectations. My brain was a bit scrambled after getting the ace and I doubled the next couple of holes but I made up for that with a couple of birdies later in the round.

Here in the States, the guy who makes the Ace is expected to buy the drinks in the bar after the round. Man, that can get expensive. Why I always aim a couple of inches left of the hole.

Drinking the bar dry wasn't an issue as there was no club competition on that day so there were hardly any members around to buy a drink. Of the two guys with me one had to leave immediately and the other wanted diet fucking coke!!! Suspect

It turned out the bar wasn't even open but the cafe serves beers. So I bought two for myself just so I didn't feel like I was drinking alone. Wink
