Traveling to Aussie Empty Traveling to Aussie

    Post  Pky6471 Fri Dec 14, 2012 9:50 am

A few questions to those who live in Aussie and have traveled to Aussie from USA
    (1) Best way to go to and from Sidney airport to downtown for 2 people (Train vs. taxi)? I think train is $15.40 each way for one
    (2) Must things to do in Sidney?
    (3) While in Sidney, is it worthwhile to visit Canberra?
    (4) Must things to do in Melbourne?
    (5) Is Brisbane worthwhile to visit or should I visit other location beside Sidney and Melbourne? If w go to Brisbane then we definitely take a day trip to Gold Coast, correct?

    Thanks guys/ girls/ AC-DC

Sorry, never been there but would like to while I am still alive. One of my little pleasures this time of year is watching their golf tournaments on the Golf Channel. Right now its the Aussie PGA. Last week it was the Aussie Open. Or Masters or whatever. I like watching those more than the U.S. equivalents. Have a good time and enjoy the good weather. But watch out because they drive on the wrong side of the street. Like in Hong Kong. Do they still drive on the wrong side in China?

MG... I am doing research now since I won't go there until Sept 2013. Sidney and Melbourne are beautiful (via Utube). Gold Coast, the surfing paradise, looks like Miami South street (?). I believe that Aussie drives on the wrong side, Shanghai is not, although driving in Shanghai would be a lot rougher than Sidney/Melbourne. I am done with traveling to Asia for now... Most likely we will tour Europe after Aussie (after retirement we could wait for gơod deals on internet with no time constraint)... We will wait for the right time and make a big trip once a yr after retirement... Hey, life expectancy for men in USA is 79

Must thing to do in Melbourne is meet Oldplayer for a game! He lives in a place called Geelong which is about a 1 hour train ride from downtown Melbourne. Hell if you're travelling all that way what's one more hour? Smile

As the rest of your post I have travelled to Aussie numerous times and Melbourne and Sydney are my two favourite cities. Brisbane is nice too and a trip to the Gold Coast is a must if you go there. September is a good time of year to go. Any later and it will get too hot in Brisbane. Never been to Canberra. Sounds like a great trip. How long are you going to be there?

Don't know all the ins and outs of Sydney but the traffic is always terrible. Train would be the best bet if you are not in a huge hurry.
Canberra is definately worth a visit. Fair way from Sydney but the library, galleries and museums are worth a look. The Australian war memorial/museum is a must see.
Melbourne in September is near the end of the footy season. Watching an AFL game is a must do.
The Art Gallery is also excellent. Melbourne's restaurants are also world renowned for their quality and diversity.Melbourne Zoo in also worth a look for sure.
Brisbane is a bit of a hick town, Gold coast is way over commercialised and is a tourist trap. All glitz and no substance. One of the highest crime rates and drug problems of any city in the country.
Go higher in Queensland to the sunshine coast. Spectacular coastal areas, rain forest and hinterland. Also great golf courses.
Speaking of golf. If you have the time come and play at my home course. My treat. It would be great to meet a GR/Caddyshack brother in the flesh. My home courses are also definately worth playing.
Enjoy your trip and perhaps I'll see you in September.

My wife and I took a Royal Caribbean cruise to Canada out of New York, 54th Street Pier on the Hudson River, that left on September 11, 2002. We made it from our place in the Baltimore suburbs to the parking deck next to the ship in three hours flat since no sane person was driving into New York that day. It was a wonderful cruise since a third of the booked passengers were no-shows. Most of the passengers were NYPD and FDNY and their wives/girlfriends who were given the cruise free of charge by greatful benefactors.

Thanks OP... U da man.... I would love to have time and play a round of golf with you, especially in Aussie. I doubt if I have time. Pky Aussie organizes 3-day World reunion but I told them I will be there for only one day since I need to tour Aussie as much as I could while being there. I like what I see on Utube about Sidney and Melbourne, one Pky friend who works for Aussie government in Canberra so he promises to take me around if/when I come to Canberra... I can't wait, especially I will be retiring after June 30th, so the Aussie trip would be wonderful

OP... Sidney and Melbourne are my stops. Want to go to Cairns from Melbourne but I would lose at least 1/2 day or more just for traveling. That's why I am thinking of Brisbane/Gold coast or maybe Adeline ? Give me your thought on the best 3rd stop and why. Thanks

Yes Cairns is 4000kms from Melbourne so a long way. It's hard to say where the best place to visit after Sydney and Melbourne is. Aussie is such a big place. I guess it depends what your interests are. There are a lot of natural sights to see, for example the Great Barrier reef. If you are into visiting cities with all they offer then Canberra is probably your best bet. A lot to see and geographically not too far from Sydney and Melbourne.

Pky, don't forget to bring a supply of food with you. No country so far from civilization and Rome has cuisine. In Australia's case they have vegemite,

Don't let Lorenzzo's scare mongering fool you Pky. Australian supermarkets sell pasta and tinned tomatoes so you can always whip up your own authentic 'Italian' home cooked meal. They also have fabulous frozen pizza bases and cheese. Hell, you'll feel just like you're in Rome.

Why would you just out of the blue troll me like that? You know I can't lay off these kinds of silly statements.

Pky, Op speaks wise words on Melbourne and Canberra, but i think he is under selling Sydney. I have been there many times as my brother lives there, and its a fantastic place to visit. Traffic is only a b!tch at peak times otherwise its pretty good and Sydney's public transport system shits all over Melbourne's. I have been to Canberra 3 or 4 times and would say there is enough attractions there to keep a person occupied for a few days.

Thanks RT.. We plan to stay in Sidney for 5 days, while there we will take a day trip (not sure how yet) to Canberra... then 3 days in Melbourne... then 3 days in Brisbane/Gold Cost or Cairns/great Barrier Reef after that. We have not decide on the last stop yet. Still in the planning stage, but it's fun planning
