If I increase the length of my irons, with butt extenders, won't that increase my swingweight?

Re: I want a little more.
Can't answer that but I'm feeling bored waiting for a flight and I have plenty to say. Went to a Dodgers game last night. Normally I'll sit with the corporate guys who really don't know baseball like Italians. Think I'm joking? Look at the percentage of Italian managers in MLB. I'm not even talking about Lasorda and Torre who graced Dodger Stadium with oozing Italianess for many collective years.
Well last night I decided on the bleachers. I remembered years back, this is where fans who really loved the game were. Fans that knew the game for the sake of the game. These people were eating porridge from shoes back then to be able to afford tickets. There may not have been business deals struck, Rolexes or vermouth on the rocks, but there were Dodger dogs and base things like crotchpicking and farting. Which should be part of people gathering together to watch a men's sport.
Times have changed. Last night I was among the lowest class, stupidest most ignorant group of people I can ever recall being around. Seriously, it was like sitting amongst two legged rodents who had grabbed tickets in their mouths from trash cans and scurried to their seats, some of whom gave birth to more rodents in front of our very eyes.
I loved seeing the game from that perspective but those of you who haven't mingled have no idea what things have become.

Re: I want a little more.
Tommy Lasorda was from a town near where we grew up. I think he may have gone to the same high school as my mother who was quite a bit older than Tommy. Same with that Italian Dodgers catcher. Forget his name. Pizza or something like that. The last Dodger games I went to with my uncle who lived in La Habra and was an A's fan featured Drysdale and Koufax as starting (and finishing) pitchers. Those were the days.

Re: I want a little more.
Theoretically yes. A couple of swingweights per half inch. This morning I glued in an Apollo Shadow steel .335" shaft into a12pierogi wrote:If I increase the length of my irons, with butt extenders, won't that increase my swingweight?
Titleist 980F 17* head (same as Phil The Lefty's been using lately although they don't want you to know it). I figured that I'd cut it to play 42" and did after the epoxy dried in 50 minutes. Then I put a slit 50 gram grip on it, weighed it, found the balance point, and calculated that it was at D-6 at 386 grams. Felt too heavy. So I cut another half inch off the butt and repeated the swing weight routine and it came in at D-2. Perfect.
Now when you put a shaft extension on a steel shaft, you make the shaft longer which increases the swing weight but you also add weight at the butt end which counter-balances the increase. I just torched off a steel extension on one of the iron shafts from a set of MX 20's I got off Ebay. The dude had put 2" extensions on all the Dynalite Gold shafts all were 2" over standard spec. When I pulled this one out, I weighed it and it came in at 12 grams.
that is a substantial amount of weight to add tot he butt end. There is a formula for adding weights to the tip and butt ends in calculating swing weight changes. I think that for every two grams added to the tip (heed) end, the SW increases one point. For every six grams added to the butt, the SW decreases one point. You just have to play with it. I make sure that I weigh every component before gluing them together. I must have two reams of scribbled club notes by now.

Re: I want a little more.
As a kid, we used to visit my aunt and uncle on sundays. They lived across the street from the Polo Grounds. Where the Giants really came from. Dad would give my cousin and me $1.00 to sit in the bleachers and get 2 dogs and a coke. When the Giants were out of town, we'd walk across the east river bridge see the Yankees play. Same $0.50 bleacher seats and 2 dogs and a coke was $0.25.
Yankee stadium had more character and the fans were a differet breed. More knowledgeable. Polo grounds folks were more homely, down to earth regular folks.
When the Giants moved out, we saw the very first game of the New York Metropolitans vs the Houston Colt 45's. Mets lost, of course!

Re: I want a little more.
Mongrel I wonder if soft stepping them once or twice might be a better option?
Leave the grips alone that way. I'm looking at them more, and they appear close to an inch short.
I'm ashamed to say that in Wrigley field I pulled my shades down and took a nap during a Cubs game.
I could have done the same thing at Comiskey park during a Whitesox game, but my seat was in direct sun, and I was cooking, and half drunk.
We usually ride the train into the city, for these type events, avoiding the parking problems, and traffic, and the fact I've been drinking. Making for a very long day.

Re: I want a little more.
There's something about going to a Dodger game that's different. The whole atmosphere of having it nestled next to Griffith park, the old school look of the stadium, Dodger Dogs. It's just a great experience. I went to a Padres game not too long ago and although it's a very cool stadium it just feels too modern.Lorenzzo wrote:Can't answer that but I'm feeling bored waiting for a flight and I have plenty to say. Re: I want a little more.
Dodger Stadium is for sure a classic, somehow having avoided the freeway overpass architecture of its era. My favorite game there took place during the World Series of 1988. I was a young grunt working away in an office on a weekend when one of the partners asked if I'd like to go. I was flattered until he gave me two of them and said he had something else he preferred to do.FamousDavis wrote:There's something about going to a Dodger game that's different. So I evacuated and found the seats six rows behind the Oakland dugout. When Gibson limped to the plate with Eckersley on the mound I told my friend we might witness history. The guy who gave me the tickets didn't seem to like me much after that.

Re: I want a little more.
Soft stepping to increase length while saving grips can be an easy solution so long as the resultant flex increase doesn't screw you up. I have soft-stepped the shafts in my MX 25's three times in their current condition and, after I got the lies and lofts adjusted, they work about as well as any irons I ever played. If you carry long irons, you may have problems finding 1 and 2 iron tapered tip shafts, though. I am lucky have a golf supplies store near me that carries a lot of NOS no-longer-made inventory.12pierogi wrote:Mongrel I wonder if soft stepping them once or twice might be a better option?

Re: I want a little more.
I suppose because I'm soft stepping dg s300 shafts it should be a more common shaft, though the longest iron I carry anymore is a 4 iron, I am essentially soft stepping twice, a dg s300 bringing it just above a regular flex, I would need to find a 2 iron shaft for the 4 iron, and I have the 3 iron for the 5 iron. That would leave the 3 iron naked or in need of a 1 iron shaft, which I have a monaco 3 iron shaft in stiff I could use.Mongrel wrote:Soft stepping to increase length while saving grips can be an easy solution so long as the resultant flex increase doesn't screw you up. Re: I want a little more.
You should be able to get a 1 iron DG shaft but if you can't, you could always try a DG R300 4 iron shaft which would be hard-stepping once. Should play similar to the S300 1 iron shaft. I don't think most folks can notice the difference.

Re: I want a little more.
Ok I'm soft stepping twice bringing them right in the middle of regular, and stiff. Should be some nice hitting dg s300 ap2 irons. More for the guy with a around 100 mph swing. Not that I had any problems hitting those around an inch short clubs 180 to two par 3s with a 5 iron.Mongrel wrote:You should be able to get a 1 iron DG shaft but if you can't, you could always try a DG R300 4 iron shaft which would be hard-stepping once. Re: I want a little more.
Keep in mind that when the iron shaft is shortened from the butt end, it will play slightly stiffer. Not as much as a tipped shaft, but not quite to stated flex either.

Re: I want a little more.
I don't know if this is totally accurate, but it seems the dg s300 is around 6.1 compared to rifle or px flex you get around a .3 change per soft step, so I'm assuming a .6 change, putting them at my preffered flex, or close of 5.5 firm, looks good on paper.
If it doesn't work, I'm the high bidder on some shafts. Plan B
I played a round of 9 hole with those ap2 and hit two shots around 180 to par 3, s with inch short clubs, and probably some stiff bastards, cut down s300. Those ap2 are easy to hit, and get up. I think the swingweight was c 8.5 I'm hoping there close to d2 with extra length.

Re: I want a little more.
DG S300 is about 5.8. Soft-stepping them twice gets you to about 5.2. The DG R300 is about 5.0.

It should work out ok, as long as I don't hit moon balls.
