Right now I have an i7 920, 6GB of G Skill Triple Channel DDR3, and a GTX 460 2 win (2 460 Chips on one board). Once I have my own Internet connection, I will probably start building another rig. Get a current processor, SSD, and a new video card. I'll be able to keep my case, Power supply, heat sink, mother board, and maybe my RAM. We'll see.
What are you running for a processor?
I have to say, I can't play FC3 on Ultra. It's just not smooth enough for me. I don't know what I'm getting for FPS on ultra, but it's not enough to enjoy. I'm playing on High, 1920x1080, right now and it still looks great. I'm really loving the SP so far after about 10 hours and only completing a small portion of the Story Line. I spend a lot of time hunting and exploring the island, and screwing with small groups of Vaas's army as I wonder across them. I love the fact that you can do what ever you want and plan your attack. Soooooo many options when it comes to taking an outpost.
I'd be surprised if you can run max 3D with those 460's.
That wife is a keeper.
You really need to give AC3 a bit more time. You're still in the part of the game where they don't give you a lot of freedom. It really opens up around Sequence 6. Once you get to the naval battles you'll be wondering why that part of the game alone wasn't fleshed out and sold as a separate franchise - it really is that good.
Ok, specs of my rig ATM:
Intel Core i7 950 @3.06 Ghz
12Gb Corsair XMS3 1600Mhz triple channel ddr3
ASUS Rampage III Gene mobo
EVGA GTX 460 Superclocked 1Gb x2 (SLI)
OCZ Fatal!ty 750w PSU
all stuffed inside this:
I put this rig together about 18 months ago. It's still not really showing it's age, but it won't be that way for long. I'll build a new one by this time next year.
I'll have to see what sort of performance I can get in FC3. I watched a YT today with a guy running a single 460 in 1080 and it seemed like he was getting frames in the 50's and up, all on ultra.
Just thought this might be worth a mention... just in case. You're running the 460 2 win, dual GPU... you remembered to re-enable SLI after the last driver update, right?
Sad news on the 3D front - looks like the skybox, spec maps, and shadows all render at screen depth, as well as crosshairs. I'll have to wait for a mod to fix it before 3D will be an option. It was the same thing with FC2.
I have to say though, the 3D - when it works right, it absolutely transforms the experience of a game. It is absolutely amazing how immersive the dimension of depth is. I'd caution against buying it though, as it's really quite unsupported in most games as of yet. Skyrim looks amazing in 3D with the helix mod.
