Far Cry 3......... Empty Far Cry 3.........

Post  Golfaholic Sun Dec 09, 2012 12:38 pm

    FON:

I remember us having a couple games of Far Cry 2 together back in the day, and I was wondering if you Picked up Far Cry 3 yet. I've been playing the SP for a few days now, and I'm really enjoying it. They just seem to do everything RIGHT, and that's a shocker for a Ubi game. There is a lot of cool stuff in this game and tons to do. I only tried the MP a little bit since my internet isn't great considering the modem I'm connected to is 50 yards and a house away.

Haven't picked up Far Cry 3 as of yet, but I am planning to get it within the month. I'm up to my eyeballs in Assassin's Creed 3 right now on PS3, but only a few more hours of play and I should have that beaten.

I think I'll get FC3 for PC since I hate playing FPS games with analog sticks. Plus I have a neat little toy for my PC that should really make FC3 shine - Nvidia 3D vision. Twisted Evil

What sort of rig are you running these days? How does it handle FC3? I'm curious if my rig with 2 GTX460's in SLI will be potent enough to handle FC3 in 3D @1920x1080, or if I'll need some upgrades.

    Well, that was quick.

My wonderful wife happened to be eavesdropping earlier as I was checking out videos and reviews of FC3, and during her run of errands this afternoon brought home a nice surprise. Very Happy

She's playing Skyrim on the rig right now, but later this evening I should be able to get around to installing the game and checking it out. I'm impressed with what I've seen so far in the videos, and relieved to learn that the system requirements are about the same as FC2, so it should run nice and smooth all maxxed out in 3D. I picked up AC III for PS3 as well, but only put 4-5 hours into it. Just didn't grab my attention, but I will probably re visit it.

Right now I have an i7 920, 6GB of G Skill Triple Channel DDR3, and a GTX 460 2 win (2 460 Chips on one board). Once I have my own Internet connection, I will probably start building another rig. Get a current processor, SSD, and a new video card. I'll be able to keep my case, Power supply, heat sink, mother board, and maybe my RAM. We'll see.

What are you running for a processor?

I have to say, I can't play FC3 on Ultra. It's just not smooth enough for me. I don't know what I'm getting for FPS on ultra, but it's not enough to enjoy. I'm playing on High, 1920x1080, right now and it still looks great. I'm really loving the SP so far after about 10 hours and only completing a small portion of the Story Line. I spend a lot of time hunting and exploring the island, and screwing with small groups of Vaas's army as I wonder across them. I love the fact that you can do what ever you want and plan your attack. Soooooo many options when it comes to taking an outpost.

I'd be surprised if you can run max 3D with those 460's.

You really need to give AC3 a bit more time. You're still in the part of the game where they don't give you a lot of freedom. It really opens up around Sequence 6. Once you get to the naval battles you'll be wondering why that part of the game alone wasn't fleshed out and sold as a separate franchise - it really is that good.

Ok, specs of my rig ATM:

    Intel Core i7 950 @3.06 Ghz
    12Gb Corsair XMS3 1600Mhz triple channel ddr3
    ASUS Rampage III Gene mobo
    EVGA GTX 460 Superclocked 1Gb x2 (SLI)
    OCZ Fatal!ty 750w PSU

    all stuffed inside this:

    Far Cry 3......... A406-2048-01

I put this rig together about 18 months ago. It's still not really showing it's age, but it won't be that way for long. I'll build a new one by this time next year.

I'll have to see what sort of performance I can get in FC3. I watched a YT today with a guy running a single 460 in 1080 and it seemed like he was getting frames in the 50's and up, all on ultra.

Just thought this might be worth a mention... just in case. You're running the 460 2 win, dual GPU... you remembered to re-enable SLI after the last driver update, right? Laughing

Sad news on the 3D front - looks like the skybox, spec maps, and shadows all render at screen depth, as well as crosshairs. I'll have to wait for a mod to fix it before 3D will be an option. It was the same thing with FC2.

I have to say though, the 3D - when it works right, it absolutely transforms the experience of a game. It is absolutely amazing how immersive the dimension of depth is. I'd caution against buying it though, as it's really quite unsupported in most games as of yet. Skyrim looks amazing in 3D with the helix mod.

LOL. It's been so long since I have been able to play a PC game, I totally forgot about updating my drivers. I just looked and I'm running one from 2011. So, I'm downloading the latest now( at 25 Kb/S) and will check the SLI settings when it's installed.

The more I think about it the more I want to build an entire new rig in the spring. This one was initially put together in 2009. I updated the GPU twice, CPU once, and RAM once. Soon be time for a Fresh start. Especially for Battlefield 4 if I want to play on max.

I could never get into 3D on PS3 games, and I imagine I would feel the same about PC. I'll Pass on that for now.

EDIT-- I just check the SLI settings on the driver I have now. It was disabled. I remember enabling it when I put the card in, but I must have updated drivers since and it went back to default - disabled.

I feel like such a noob.

I find games too boring now, but when watching movies gets the better of me I move towards some of my old games:

    Dungeon Keeper 2
    Serious Sam 1

Those two really make my day as its more humorous then intense gaming.

Well, Far Cry 3 sure is a quirky mistress.

She hates DX11, has issues with SLI, and required some high maintenance tweaking, but damn she's WILD in the sack. Shocked

Some highlights of my experiences so far:

    - Eaten by crocodile
    - Eaten by leopard
    - Eaten by tiger
    - Mauled by bear
    - Eaten by shark
    - Eaten by komodo dragon
    - Devoured by pack of wolves
    - Dismembered by dingos
    - Killed in a head on collision with drunk driver (awesome death too - both vehicles plummeted over a cliff and exploded on impact action movie style)
    - Drowned
    - Burned to death in a jeep
    - Detached from zip-line too early and became a cliff painting
    - Fell off tower through the roof of my car (brand new sunroof)

Oddly enough, I haven't been killed by gunshot wounds. jocolor

So far this ranks right up there as some of the most fun I've ever had in a game. Absolutely loving all there is to do. I've put about 8 hours of gameplay into it so far, haven't even touched the multiplayer yet - probably won't for a while. The story is quirky and quite hilarious at times. Really loving it so far.

Hm. Reading the FC3 Forums, the kids with low end rigs are crying about shitty performance, but It runs smooth for me on High. I COULD manage Very High, but I just don't get the FPS I want. After i enabled SLI with these new drivers, I get a "No VGA Signal" Black screen sometimes while in game or as soon as I load media IE) Youtube. So, SLI is disabled again.

I too thought I could out swim the sharks. Haven't seen the Dingo's yet, but I'm looking for them. I need to gut one for Crafting. I take it you haven't had the pleasure of being raped by a Buffalo? They take almost two mags of MP5, and don't take kindly to being fucked with.

I like "Death From Above", especially to set off a nice little offensive on a two man patrol. The Bow and Arrow is pretty slick.
