NHL hockey is back, and the Flames finally have a win! cheers

Those Oilers, they're building something special up there. lol!

Where are you, Riverologist? Very Happy

Did you see Bouwmeester tonight? Finally free from the Sutter shackles, he is earning his salary. I like this team with Hartley as the new bench boss. Loving the new talent on the team as well. Hudler and Cervenka looked great together tonight, Backlund continues to progress into a legit top 6 forward, Baertschi is going to be a helluva player once he gets used to the NHL level of play, and Wideman has injected a lot of much needed offense from the back end. If Kipper can just keep being Kipper, and Iginla can get his goal scoring going, the Flames may indeed have a shot at making the playoffs.

The only sore spots I can see are Cammalleri needing to find his game again, and Giordano looking a little shaky early on this season. Even Stajan is doing well. This could be the year where the Flames shock everyone. I think they're vastly underrated this year, but of course, only time will tell. I'm feeling optimistic.

I immediately lost interest when I realized this entire post was about the Flamers. What a waste of bandwidth.

This is almost as popular as one of Tony's LPGA Thoughts and Predictions threads. I had actually forgot that the NHL was on strike. I thought the league folded a few years back.

The only hockey player I've met in person is Wayne Gretzky. I was caddying at Sherwood and he was a member there. I took his bag from him and carried it over to the driving range. I sneaked a peak into his bag looking for pucks but no such luck.

    His wife is hot.

That's the extent of my hockey knowledge. I thought Rob Lowe was pretty convincing as a hockey player in that movie he made with Patrick Swayze....Youngblood.

I thought the same and started to post but lost interest.

Anybody here the bit on Radio Lab this weekend about the book Outliers? The writer did a play by play of a real hockey game but instead of names used the players birth date. Almost every player on the ice was born in the first three months. Evidently the cutoff date for the juniors is January. So, all the older juniors are born in the first part of the year. These kids, because of maturity, make all star teams, get better coaching, etc. It's enough of a head start that it progresses all the way to the pro's. You would think it would level out by a certain age but all the extra coaching and ice time at a young age is too much for most kids to overcome. It's an interesting take when you think about other ventures in life where dumb luck, like the day you were born, could effect your entire life...

We can talk about the Leafs if you'd like.

How about that Dion Phaneuf? The Leafs Captain and franchise defenceman is a league-worst -8 in +/-. I hear he's got some sick DJ skillz in the locker room though. Laughing

I bet he can't wait until Luongo gets traded to Toronto (finally), so he'll no longer be the most overpaid/overrated player on the team. Razz

As much as I love to cheer against the Leafs though, I have a feeling they're starting to trend upward for a change - though this year their fate will likely be the same as the Flames, either just squeak into the playoffs or just barely miss.

This coming from a Bengals fan. Laughing

I heard some rumors that the NFL might be considering adding a couple expansion franchises in the next few years. If Cincy can secure one of those expansion franchise deals they might actually have a football team for a change. It must suck that a Bengals ticket never includes the opportunity to watch a football game. tongue

I don't blame you for not following the NHL though. Columbus is your most local team, and they've been terrible for years.

At least the Reds are respectable again.

The Bengals have made the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years. Granted, they get bounced in the first round in embarrassing fashion, but most franchises in any professional sport would take a 75% strike rate of making the playoffs.
Who am I kidding? The Bengals are terrible, and the only thing being slightly better than mediocre does for them is ensure that they will get worse draft picks, which they will waste anyhow.

I don't get it, Phaneuf is such a star player for me in NHL 13.

I'm fine with them squeaking into the playoffs.
